The nondenominational Chapel at St. Vincent Hospital’s Oncology Center offers
a quiet retreat for prayer, meditation and worship. As soon as patients
and visitors approach the Oncology Center, the stained glass window greets
them with its reflective white glasses. The window’s exterior imagery
echoes the flowing water and waving foliage that animate adjacent, beautifully
landscaped gardens and walkways. Once inside the chapel, the stained glass
window reveals sparkling textures and warm color. Transparent colors and
filmy white glasses allow glimpses out into the gardens and skyscape while
grays and translucent whites provide a sense of privacy and separation. |

The stained glass design is inspired by the uplifting concepts of growth
and flowering which symbolize hope, enlightenment and transcendence.
The window can be seen as a metaphor for our reaching up toward enlightenment
or for the reassuring descent of light down to us. Shapes reminiscent
of both germinating seed and opening blossom unfold upward from the
darkest lower areas of gray glass into the hopeful, brighter parts of
the window. The brightest sections at the top appear to flow past the
upper limit of the window frame into an infinite, unseen brightness
beyond.
