Torah Windows THE GENESIS (BERESHIT) WINDOW The circular area in the upper part of this window implies the completion of the Creation. The seven “flashes” or “bolts” that radiate downwards to the circle from above represent the seven days of God’s work. The seventh “flash” is a cooler color (blue) to indicate the day God rested. These “flashes” or “bolts” are seen in all five windows. The are reminders of God’s continuing involvement in the growth of His People. The interior of the Creation circle is pristine white, signifying perfection and purity in pre-Expulsion Eden. The rings surrounding the Creation Circle are Dichroic glass and indicate the omnipotence of God during the act of Creation. The Creation Circle is repeated in the opposite Deuteronomy Window where, along with the opalescent, dark amber glass that “scrolls” across all five windows, it represents the Torah as the written record of the dramatic and powerful story God’s Chosen People. Usually seen in an upright position, the Torah is here depicted as it appears when viewed end-on and partially unrolled. In the upper right of this window, the rainbow is a reminder of the covenant God made to man after the Flood. It is in this window that the Jewish People emerge from the Creation circle (the expulsion from Eden) as the amber band or path that continues across all five of the Torah Windows. The band then encounters the three smaller circles that symbolize Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The God-filled Patriarchs are made with Dichroic glass underscoring their special relationship with God. When the amber band of the Jewish People emerges from the Patriarchs it is subdivided into twelve smaller bands that represent the Twelve Tribes of Israel. After Joseph leads the People to Egypt, the period of slavery begins. In the lower right of this window the “dark” period of the Captivity is represented by a gray “shadow” that engulfs the pathway of the twelve tribes.
