"Windowless" Installations is a category that includes examples from each of the preceding divisions. The common thread linking the commissions in this category is the use of mirror to create a stained glass installation that is independent of true windows or an artificial light source. Jeff Smith began experimenting with this idea in 1978 as an alternative to the garish backlighting that is usually required for wall-mounted installations.
