Autonomous (Free-Hanging) Stained Glass is conceptually similar to easel painting. It is through my autonomous work that I am able to develop artistically while exploring new design and technical approaches to my medium. This work is not done by commission. It can be seen in my galleries and occasionally in museum exhibitions where I am pleased to note it has met with critical praise. The techniques and design attitudes that continue to mature and evolve through my autonomous work, frequently find their way into my architectural work as will be seen in "Commissions" which follows. For instance, the Lightlines that grew out of my "Lightsketch" series are now often seen in commission-work. Applied leadwork and other lead techniques that are now common in my large-scale installations were first perfected through autonomous efforts. Several autonomous panels have since been incorporated into an architectural context as permanent windows (i.e.: "Train of Thought" and "Aperture: Phytochrome"). Another autonomous example presented here, Zephyr, actually turns the tables, borrowing from my "Windowless" architectural work to become a mirror-lit wall-mounted autonomous panel. |
The examples included here in "Autonomous" are presented chronologically from most recent to earliest. |
